## Overview

Colorado enacted the first comprehensive US state law on algorithmic discrimination, Senate Bill 24-205 (the Colorado Artificial Intelligence Act), signed on 17 May 2024. It imposes a duty of reasonable care on developers and deployers of "high-risk" AI systems that make or substantially influence consequential decisions in areas such as employment, lending, housing, education, healthcare, insurance and government services. Its effective date was postponed by a 2025 special-session bill and, before it arrived, SB 26-189 (signed 14 May 2026) repealed and re-enacted the framework as a narrower automated-decision-making-technology law applying from 1 January 2027.
