Overview

Chile updated its 2021 National AI Policy in 2024, keeping the ten-year horizon to 2031 but reorienting it around ethics, governance and inclusion after a participatory process across the country's regions. Chile updated its 2021 National AI Policy in 2024, keeping the ten-year horizon to 2031 but reorienting it around ethics, governance and inclusion after a participatory process across the country's regions. The accompanying action plan lists 177 initiatives coordinated by 14 ministries under axes covering enabling factors, development and adoption, and governance and ethics, with periodic progress reporting. The update was presented on 2 May 2024 together with the announcement of a government bill to regulate AI systems.

Introduced by presidential message in May 2024 and merged with an earlier parliamentary motion (Boletín 15869-19), the bill classifies AI system uses into unacceptable, high, limited and no-evident-risk categories, prohibits certain practices, and sets obligations, incident reporting and sanctions. It creates a Technical Advisory Council on AI to advise MinCiencia and proposes periodic review of the law. The Chamber of Deputies approved the text in October 2025 and it is now in second constitutional stage before the Senate's Future Challenges, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee.
